Austin in Ukranian Village, 24” x 24”

Mayor Jane Byrne officially designated this community on the near west side of Chicago "Ukrainian Village" in 1983. And even though it's been relatively recent that it was officially named, this neighborhood has been home to a large, vibrant Ukrainian population since the beginning of the 20th century. And now more than ever, I am struck by the pride and resiliency I see and feel from this community. They love their little piece of the city, and it shows.

It's an area with culture, history and distinct architecture. This particular building in my painting, Tuman's Tap has been an enduring fixture of the neighborhood since I lived here, 20 years ago, and long before from what I've heard. We would often visit this quirky spot with our newly adopted pup, Austin, for a drink and bite to eat...and eventually with our newborn in tow. It was a neighborhood favorite.

Most of you who know me well are aware of just how much Austin meant to me. This was his neighborhood when he first became ours. So of course he's in the painting, striking a familiar pose with a child by his side, exactly how he spent much of his life.
